Vampire Knight - Review

Category: Vampire Knight, Anime Reviews @ 9:44 pm

Ok… so I spent 3 hours of my day marathoning the rest of Vampire Knight.
geez… in the middle of every episode I kept wondering… "when the heck is this episode over ~_~?"
I’d pause in between to chat with my friends cuz this anime just bored me. Forgive me, Vampire Knight fans, but I think this anime is a tad bit over rated.
If I were to describe Vampire Knight in one word… it’d be cheesy.

The whole concept of vampires in was always cheesy in my opinion, and I had my hopes up really high for this anime. Unfortunately, I put my hopes up a little too high and ended up disappointed.

One of the biggest flaws of Vampire Knight are the characters. Most of the characters in this anime are just there to appeal to fan girls. I’d say 80% of the characters in this anime are bishies with very little difference in personality ~_~;; I mean, it took me a while to tell the difference between Kain and Aidou cuz they looked, well, the same to me. A lot of characters were introduced at once, and because the first season was so short, there wasn’t enough time to get comfortable with all the characters. Even after watching the whole series and reading the manga, I can admit that I barely know the names and faces of the students in the night class. And I’m usually good with names >_>;;
Now, the characters like Yuuki and Kaname don’t have very flexible personalities in my opinion. I can tell that these two characters are barely going to develop throughout the series. I mean, in the first season, Kaname stayed pretty much the same, no real change. As for Yuuki, I did see a slight change in her opinion towards vampires as well as Zero, but in my opinion, the only character that’s REALLY developing is Zero. However, Zero has a grudge against like… everyone. This really conflicts with my enjoyment of the series because it ends up being, well…repetitive. The anime keeps on making flash backs about Zero and it’s 60% of the time about how he came about to hate someone, or how someone led him to hate vampires, how someone hates him, etc…

I think another flaw, that can’t exactly be helped, is how Vampire knight is airing at the same time as Special A and Shugo Chara. Both SA and SC have the "exclusive" classes. Special A is a class of students with supernatural powers and intelligence, and Shugo Chara has the Guardians. Vampire knight has the Night classes, and the unrealistic + ANNOYING fangirls who obsess over them. So I feel like I’m seeing the same idea eaten and pooped out over and over. This is another reason why i find Vampire knight pretty cheesy :P Again, this can’t be helped, and if I watched Vampire Knight before Special A and Shugo Chara i probably wouldn’t think this way.

As for the story, Vampire Knight is a good idea that was not executed very well. I feel like it won’t go any deeper than grudges, angst and vampire hunting. There is a tad bit of romance and comedy, but it’s really not enough to save the series for me. Yes, there is chemistry between Yuuki and Zero. Maybe it’s just me, but i didn’t feel anything for those two…

I can’t really find anything about this series that I like. I think that fangirls just obsess over this anime because of Zero or something cuz the story just didn’t do it for me.

So the first season left me really disappointed, but I’ll give this anime a second chance with the second season. Maybe someone can prove me wrong, I dunno, but I predict my opinion of this anime will not change. I will always think of Vampire Knight as a cheesy anime.

    Haha, don’t worry I gave it a 7 out of 10 too for this series. Yeah, I thought it has good concept but I think it can be better.

    It’s adapted from a shoujo manga, so of course there are bishounens to appeal to lustful fangirls slightly out of touch with reality.

    The manga is much better. It’s darker than the anime (due to the latter’s cut-aways to slapstick humour and dumb expressions). I dropped this after episode 2. =)

    Honestly, the Vampire Knight manga has never been a favourite of mine. The anime had a strong point: the music. The music in this series was awesome. An OST I would love to purchase. But, other than that, both the manga and anime are lack-luster to me. They could certainly be better.

    But for some reason or another I feel really bad for Zero after he starts to become a Level E. But, that’s the only emotion I get from this series.

    If you think vampire animes are cheesy, you should check out Hellsing Ultimate OVA Series [ http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=5114 ] I’m not a fan of the show nor a vampire fan, but hey it might change your mind. Now that I recommend it to you I should go see it for myself since I already saw the anime already, but not the OVAs. And uhh reading your anime reviews is very enjoyable. This is the first time I stumble across the site. Nice to meet you =)
